Briefing:

One of the most difficult challenges that the young Terran Republic faces in these troubling times is the so-called Neurasian Question. The Neurasian people are the descendants of Denebola’s original colonists who first threw off the oppressive yoke of the Terran Alliance during the Outer Reaches Rebellion. The Neurasian people established a lasting relationship with the Free Worlds League during Denebola’s era of independence. But with the rise of the Terran Hegemony from the ashes of the corrupt Alliance the Neurasians rejoined Terra. The proud Neurasians, along with Denebola’s other inhabitants, the Zapidos, who were friendly with the Federation of Skye, were welcomed back into the Terran fold. Their assimilation back into the Terran nation was remarkably smooth thanks to some skillful diplomacy. All sides agreed to the establishment of a unique planetary confederacy that did its best to govern Denebola peacefully for the benefit of all. During this period of reintegration a third colony was established on the uninhabited continent of Slovakia by new colonists from Hegemony. With the introduction of this third party, the new governing arrangement worked well for the planet until the formation of the Star League. During the formation of the League, architect of the Star League Ian Cameron agreed to share control of Denebola with House Marik and Steiner as part of the League Accords. With the creation of the Star League Denebola became a shinning example of the cooperative spirit of the new League.

By: Don MakSlowly this cooperative ownership effort declined with the Star League in the mid-27th century, until the Amaris Coup finally destroyed it. Years of growing tension among the three governing parties exploded as Republican forces played one against the other while maintaining control of Denebola. The consequences of this divide and the Rim Worlds occupation carried over after the planet’s liberation by the SLDF. The Great Houses, in particular House Marik muddied the situation further by playing favorites with vital relief supplies to the devastated planet. By the time Terran authorities took charge of the situation it was too late to stave off hostilities. Well armed Neurasian freedom fighters, backed by the Free Worlds League, called for cession from the Terran state. However, this call to arms did not appeal to the other peoples of Denebola who saw House Marik as a greater threat to their freedom than the nascent Republic. While the Centuran Accords specifically addressed the issue of Denebolian governance it failed to resolve the brewing conflict with Captain-General Kenyon Marik’s refusal to participate in the peace talks. Although the Centuran Accords had nominally placed Denebola under the aegis of the Terran Republic, it convinced the Neurasian insurgency that their cherished autonomy was under direct assault and they grew more violent.

Using disguised military supplies stockpiled by the Free Worlds League during Operation Liberation that were originally earmarked as relief aid, the Neurasian fighters fought a vicious guerilla war. While they lacked heavy weapons and equipment the Neurasians enjoy expert knowledge of their homelands which they have used with terrifying success. Most of the violence generated by the insurrection has taken place in and around New Bonn, the capital city of Neurasia, which sits along the entire northern edge of the grand inland Lake Diamond. This dangerous land is considered occupied territory by the insurgents. As a result, elements of the 6th Oliver Borderers constantly patrol the city proper and have been semi-effective in safeguarding the Neurasian pro-Republic government. These efforts, along with the rising accumulation of collateral damage may finally be turning the tide of popular support against the insurgency. Additionally, the Terran Republic’s CIB and their Department of Counter-Insurgency (DCI or the Spyhunters) continue to fight a covert war with SAFE’s Covert Operations branch over several border worlds including embattled Denebola. This conflict of cloak and daggers was recently highlighted by the successful interception of a Free Worlds League Liberation unit by Terran forces attempting to land on-planet.

UNR will continue to provide updates as this unfortunate situation unfolds.
