End of an Era

Today the last remaining holdover from the Star League, the Department of Communications, announced that it would officially change its name to ComStar marking the end of an era. Former Minister Jerome Blake acknowledged that his organization bore little resemblance to its old designation. He also credited his protégé, Conrad Toyama, for properly recognizing this fact and coming up with its new name. ComStar is a combination of Communications Enterprises Incorporated and Starlight Broadcasting Limited who in conjunction with the Department of Communications provided interstellar communication services to the entire Human Sphere.
More than just a simple name change this move also saw a restructuring from semi-governmental agency to private corporation. Blake himself outlined these reforms in a simple two page document entitled the Communications Primer of 2785. This paper outlined the configuration of ComStar including Blake’s own position. As the Prime Administrator of the new organization he becomes the chief executive and chairperson of ComStar. While retains extensive authority and control over the HPG Network an advisory board named the First Circuit can overrule his decisions by simple majority vote. This body represents the very core of the communications company and is made of six Chief Administrators. These high officers also serve as assistant executives that administer a distinct aspect of corporate operations. Called Ministries in honor of Blake’s original Star League title these branches facilitate business affairs in a smooth manner.
In spite of all these changes Blake has pledged to carry on his duties in roughly the same fashion as his Star League mandate originally called for. “ComStar will deal with all of the Great Houses in an even handed style while maintaining strict neutrality during any conflict.” He also announced plans to tour the InnerSphere soon to meet with every House Lord and confirm this assurance in person. Reaction to the name change and reorganization varies from place to place. As shown by the First Circuit’s unanimous acceptance of the proposal enjoys widespread support within the company. Outside ComStar there seems to be a great deal more skepticism from the nations of the Sphere. Some have expressed increasing concern about the growing mysticism and secrecy of the organization. Only time will tell what will become of this new player on the stage of the InnerSphere.
